This Sunday is Easter, or as I like to call it, Resurrection Sunday. This is the only holiday that is never on the same day every year. It is always on Sunday, but sometimes it's in late March and most of the time it's in April. According to my friend Google, it is always the Sunday after the first full moon that occurs after the spring equinox. I have always felt that this holiday was probably number four as far as holiday popularity after Christmas, Thanksgiving and Independence Day. Christmas as we know always had a "season" in December. Thanksgiving of course has a turkey and a feast, and Independence Day has its fireworks show. What does Easter have? A bunny! Or does it?
Easter was always confusing to me as a kid because it had a double meaning. As a family, we went to church and sat through a long Catholic Mass that felt like it was 3 days long. We celebrated the death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday. Easter morning, my brother and sister and I would get up early and were happy to see the Easter bunny came to our house to leave us gifts as well as an Easter basket that had a chocolate bunny and jellybeans. When we got older. we always decorated colorful eggs. One holiday that had two meanings. Was it about Jesus dying for my sins or was it about a Bunny delivering goodies to kids. When I was 13 and gave my heart to Jesus, I discovered in 1978 what Easter really was. It had nothing to do with a bunny, chocolate, jellybeans or candy. It had EVERYTHING to do with what Jesus did for you and me.
He was accused of being a criminal even after he healed the sick and gave the blind sight. They beat him, whipped him and nailed him to a cross at Calvary. There were nails driven into his hands and feet. Three nails. After he suffered, bled and died they placed his body in a tomb. They sealed the tomb and placed two guards in front of it to make sure nobody would steal his body. After three days, Jesus rose again! HE IS ALVE!! Jesus took our place on the cross by becoming the sacrificial lamb. Now all of our sins are forgiven, and we can now receive him into our hearts by asking him to forgive us of our sins. We now receive eternal life with him not because of what we do or by our good works. It's all because of what he did for us by dying for us. That, my friends is why we celebrate no, not Easter. RESURRECTION SUNDAY! So, this Sunday, remember to celebrate Jesus and what he did for you. Resurrection Sunday should be celebrated every single day!
HAPPY RESURRECTION SUNDAY EVERYONE!!!
